Autism, Covid-19 and returning to work

Routines can be very important to autistic people, and changes cause stress.

With Covid-19 and staff being put on furlough or losing jobs, and worrying if they will have a job this is stressful and has meant creating new routines.  Isolation, fears for family and friends add to this. Yes these are fears felt by many people but can be very stressful for those with autism who can find life challenging anyway.

Returning to work will mean

  1. Travelling again – possibly public transport
  2. Back to the office environment with it’s distractions, to be filtered out again
  3. Socialising – in an environment you can’t control
  4. Masking – putting the mask on to fit in again
  5. Creating a new routine

All the above-mentioned could be very stressful and exhausting, however much it is nice to be back.  This does not mean that we are slow or unwilling to work, just another change, like most people feel starting new jobs.

The best actions that people can take is to understand, give us time to adjust back in and understand any stress reactions and outbursts. We will then settle back much more quickly and easily.
