Autism – Being a foreigner in your own land, constantly trying to fit in

I have autism and have spent my life trying to fit in at school and work.  Failing a lot of the time.

It can feel like acting on day, a foreigner in your own land, standing out, however hard you try.

How do we stand out so easily?  By what we say, how we say it, how we stand, socialising (or is it failing to socialise?  Yet we have so many skills we can bring to work, including:

  1. Problem solving
  2. Computer work
  3. Databases
  4. Processing skills

What company would not like to bring these skills on board?  How can this be achieved?  I can help you and help your company grow and prosper in team work.

I believe that the approaches below will help.

  1. Respect – how we are, what we say, how we say it, how we act. We do not like to cause offence and just want to be part of the team.  Come to where we are, it can be harder for us to understand you.
  2. Take time to get to know us – discuss issues in a relaxed, non judgemental atmosphere.  We can then feel at ease, and reply in a relaxed manner.
  3. Mentoring – may also help, or support from Human Resources. Have someone to be a friend, support, explain errors, make us feel welcome and relaxed.  We will then feel able to bring our great skills to work, with you as a team, to grow with the company.

So to summarise – respect us, get to know us, provide support.

Please leave feed back, and feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this further.
